Travel & Communications in Cyprus
Led by Cyprus Airways,
the national
carrier, the island is served by approximately 30 major airlines,
linking it with the world through its international airports at
Larnaca and Paphos.
Driving is on the left in Cyprus and commuting
times between towns and villages are relatively short. There is
a good infrastructure of modern roads and motorways that put paid
to any gridlock and give the motorist a choice of alternative routes.
Visitors
to Cyprus can legally drive on the island as long as they hold a
valid driving license for the vehicle they intend to use. If wishing
to take up permanent residency, then a Cypriot Driving license is
required at a cost of CYP 35. This is a one off payment and the
license does cover you for life.
Taxis in Cyprus
If you are on the island
without your own car, then Cyprus also has numerous taxi services.
Apart from the normal Private hire taxis, there are the Island's
service taxis. These are scheduled to run on a variety of routes
between larger towns, and on a very regular basis. They work out
cheaper than private hire taxis as you only pay per person, much
like a bus fare.
Most larger towns have their own internal bus
service, and various bus companies also schedule links between all
of the major towns on a daily time-table. For the more outlying
towns and villages, there is a service, but the frequency of buses
passing through is understandably less.
Telephones
The telecommunications
on the island are amongst the best in the world, making Cyprus one
of the cheapest countries for mobile phones and landline costs.
This has been an important factor in establishing Cyprus as one
of Europe's leading offshore business centres.
The Cyprus
Telecomunication
Authority (CYTA) oversees the implementation of the telecommunication
infrastructure on the island. Payphones are found in numerous locations
and phone cards are available at Banks, Souvenir Shops, Post Offices
and Kiosks etc. There is a mobile phone network and a new prepaid
mobile phone service. For travelers wishing to use their own phones,
this is subject to their service providers at home having a roaming
agreement with CYTA - and most do.
Cyprus Shipping
With some 3,000
ships on its registry, Cyprus also has the fifth largest merchant
fleet in the world, and over the last few years the increased use
of the island as an offshore base has been of particular importance
to its booming economy.
Language Greek is the population's
mother tongue, although it is spoken with a Cypriot dialect. English,
however, is widely spoken and understood almost everywhere, and
approximately 50% of all TV transmissions are in English. As Cyprus
becomes increasingly popular with investors and tourists alike,
knowledge of French, Russian and German is also on the increase.
