Living in Cyprus
When buying a property
with view to permanent
residence in Cyprus, any non-Cypriot owning a Villa is automatically
entitled to a residence
permit, but the law does not actually require them to obtain this
permanent residence permit.
Permanent residence is, however, easily
granted once certain requirements are fulfilled. If applying
for the permit, the new applicant submits an application to the
local immigration office in the area of residence.
With it, he must
provide proof that he and his family are self supporting. There
are a several documents which are requested along with the application,
and these are as follows:
A copy of the sale/rental agreement
for the property
Copies of
pension/retirement income
Any
other document relevant to income
Three photos and passport
Education
The
Education system in Cyprus is split into two categories: Public/Government
schools and Privately run schools. The majority of public schools
teach lessons in Greek and English, so a good understanding of Greek
is essential if a foreign student wishes to gain a public education.
In
addition to the many public schools in Cyprus, there are also a
variety of Private Elementary and Secondary Schools for English,
French, Russian and Italian speaking students. The private schools
are predominantly run and owned by individuals and bodies, with
student tuition fees funding the concept. These schools are still
liable to open inspection from the Ministry of Education and Culture.
Tertiary education is provided at the University of Cyprus, as well as at
a number of private English language colleges that offer Accredited
Undergraduate courses in various fields, including Business Studies,
Marketing, Economics and Computer Science etc.
Political System
Cyprus
is an independent sovereign republic with a presidential system
of Government. Its fully Democratic, European style system retains
the respect of individual rights and allows unlimited scope for
private initiative. In 2004, Cyprus became a fully fledged
member state of the European Union. It is also a longstanding member
of the United Nations.
Legal System The legal system in Cyprus
is based on the British legal system. The Land Registry in Cyprus
is probably the most advanced and reliable system in the world,
and is also based on the British equivalent.
Purchasing Property
in Cyprus, therefore, is far more secure with regard to title deeds
than it is in many other Mediterranean Countries.
With crime
at a remarkably low level (1/6 of the European average), Cyprus
offers another reason for its long-standing popularity with foreign
property investors, for whom security has become a key issue. Visitors
are invariably surprised and reassured by the relaxed aspect of
life on the island where crime is virtually unheard of, and theft
and burglaries are not everyday occurrences.
