Cyprus History
2500 - 1050 B.C - The
Bronze age. During the bronze age Cyprus was known
as "Alasia". Trading between neighbouring countries was
booming as Cyprus exploited its copper reserves.
1050 - 750 B.C
- Geometric Period. By the end of the Geometric Period Cyprus had
already been split into ten city kingdoms and the island was developing
its prosperity.
730 -325 B.C - Archaic and Classical Period.
Cyprus became an important location in the Greek world and many
of the city kingdoms were to become sub-domains of Assyria, Egypt
and Persia.
333-325 B.C - Cyprus becomes part of Alexandra the
Great's empire.
325 - 58 B.C - Cyprus falls under the control
of Egypt and Pafos is designated as the capital.
58 B.C - 330
A.D - Roman Period. Cyprus is merged with the Roman Empire and the
Roman leader on the island is converted to Christianity by Saints
Paul and Barnabas. He becomes the first Christian ruler in the world.
In 313 freedom of worship was granted.
330 - 1191 A.D - Byzantine
Period. Christianity becomes the official religion and Cyprus becomes
part of Byzantium. This period also saw massive earthquakes with
the subsequent rebuilding of large Basilicas. In 647 the first raids
by Arabs took place which lasted until 965 when they were ousted
from Cyprus.
1191 - 1192 - Cyprus came under the possession of
Richard the Lion Heart, and he later remarried Berengaria of Navarre,
crowning her Queen of England.
1192 - 1489 - Frankish Period.
The Greek Orthodox Church was officially replaced by the Catholic
Church, although the Greek Church managed to survive.
1489 -
1571 - Venetian Period. The island was fortified by the Venetians
against attacks by the Ottomans. Walls were used to enclose Nicosia
and Famagusta.
1571 - 1878 - Ottoman Period .The island was
over-run by Ottoman troops after long battles and the Greek Orthodox Church
was restored.
1878 - 1960 British Period. Cyprus came under the
administration of Great Britain and in 1914 it was annexed fully
as the Ottomans joined World War 1 on Germany's side. In 1925
Turkey relinquished all rights to Cyprus and the island became a Crown
Colony. Cypriot citizen volunteers served alongside the British
Forces during the Second World War. In 1955 a liberation struggle
was fought against the British Colonial rule which lasted until 1959
1960 - The Republic of Cyprus became and independent republic in 1960
and also joined the United Nations.
2004 - Cyprus joins
the European Union.
