Cyprus Cost of Living
The Cyprus currency
system
is based on the decimal system. The Cyprus Pound
is divided into 100 cents. Coins range in value, and include denominations
of 1, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents. Bank notes are circulated in denominations
of: 1, 5, 10 and 20 Cyprus Pounds.
The relatively low cost of
living in Cyprus is an advantage which will appeal to the potential
property buyer. Cyprus offers a full but comparatively inexpensive
lifestyle. Villa and Apartment prices are low and the cost of renting
compared to other countries still remains cheap.
The local markets
are bustling places that display a vast array of fresh fruit, vegetables,
meat and fish. The modern supermarkets are fully stocked with a
large range of local and imported goods and produce. For those wishing
to eat out, restaurants on Cyprus offer a very inexpensive alternative,
with reasonable prices for both food and drink.
Cyprus Health Care
There
are the two main health care sectors in Cyprus; the Government run
hospitals and the private health care hospitals and clinics.
The
cost of medical treatment in Government hospitals is very low. For
refugees, army and civil servants it's free. For non-Cypriots, the
public sector hospitals will usually, for a small annual fee, offer
treatment to those who have become a permanent resident.
Those
wishing to consult Doctors privately will find a wide choice of
competent Doctors, Specialists and Surgeons practicing on the island.
The fees for private treatment, compared to other European countries,
are relatively low. In these clinics standards are very high. There
are numerous clinics and polyclinics situated around the island
in the larger towns like Paphos and Larnaca.
Pharmacies
are found in all towns and cities, and the availability of over
the counter medicines is comparable to the UK. In larger cities,
like Limassol, there are always a few Pharmacies that remain open throughout
the night and at weekends. The details are usually printed in local newspapers
as they work on a rotating basis.
Cyprus Banking The
banking system
in Cyprus closely resembles the British system. There are numerous banks
which are conveniently situated all over the island. Non-Cypriot citizens
may open foreign currency and local deposit accounts without difficulty.
Once the citizen has taken up permanent residency on the island,
then an internal bank account can be opened.
The majority of
big international banks are represented throughout the island,
while Cypriot banks can themselves be found in many countries
of the world.
Also, most major credit cards such as Visa, Mastercard
and American Express are widely used and accepted almost everywhere
in Cyprus.
Employment in Cyprus Under the Aliens and
Immigration Law,
non-Cypriots wishing to take up employment in Cyprus are required
to have a work permit. Applications for employment permits are made
by the prospective employer, and submitted to the migration officer
in Nicosia. The accompanying documents required are:
A C.V.
of the applicant The contract of employment Copies of certificates
and Qualifications achieved by the applicant
The Migration
Officer will undoubtedly favour those applicants who's experience/training
and qualifications are in the field of work that has a shortage
of manpower on the island.
